Not All Screentime Is Equal
Just as we distinguish between "nutritious food" and "junk food," we must distinguish between Active and Passive usage.
The Quality Equation
Active Use (Creating) vs Passive Use (Consuming)
Model based on Gonski Institute Reports (2023)
⚡
Active Screen Time
Engages the brain. It involves coding, writing, editing video, or strategic gaming. It builds skills, confidence, and "flow."
The "Nutritious" Diet
- ✓ Creative: GarageBand, Procreate, CapCut, Coding.
- ✓ Learning: Duolingo, Khan Academy, Chess.
- ✓ Result: "Flow state" and sustained dopamine satisfaction.
💤
Passive Screen Time
Puts the brain in "zombie mode." Infinite scrolling, watching short videos, or mindlessly browsing. This is where anxiety and comparison traps live.
The "Junk Food" Diet
- ✕ Short-Form: TikTok, Reels, Shorts.
- ✕ Consumption: Shopping, Infinite Feeds.
- ✕ Result: "Dopamine crashes," irritability, and reduced attention span.
